March 2018 - Aug 2018
In Aug 2018 vmware announced to deliver a Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) solution as-a-service to EDGE and on-premises locations through a cloud like experience. For the first time in their offering vmware will take care of managing the infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and performing patching and maintenance directly from the cloud for on-premises infrastructure. This means customers can focus on their applications rather than spending time on day-to-day infrastructure management and lifecycle operations. Before August 2018 this feature did not exist and the Product Design team was tasked to come out with a completely new solution.
This introduced a major change in the way the legacy service will be delivered combining cloud, software, and hardware in one solution. The only way to solve this challenging objective was to reinvent the experience of onboarding, setting and managing the virtual infrastructure. The main concern was that heavy setting and large data input including locations entries, and hardware network complexity, will translate into a users' lack of control in terms of troubleshooting and network security. Furthermore the process of setting, delivering and managing an SDDC is traditionally really cumbersome and unintuitive.
The Product Design team was tasked to create a complete flows of experiences for this project in few months. The major effort was to engage the engineering team and the development partners to pursue innovative design approaches. The goal was to let them realize that merging in one experience cloud and on-premises into a completely virtual infrastructure was possible and that exploring a new GUI design was the only way possible to make this experience seamless.
We crafted and executed UX and UI prototypes that not only convinced them of the feasibility and ease of use of the service but also opened their eyes on the incredible potential this is for the future of virtual infrastructure and vmware as a whole.
